April 21 NamesakeIndian culture has been interesting me for a long time. How can people live in their own world given the merged global economy? How come nobody ever complains about arranged marriage? Is it really this easy to adjust to one another?
At the time I feel like knowing more about this culture, a friend of mine recommend me to watch a movie titled "namesake". It talks about a young man's journey from the creation of ambition to travel abroad to adapting to the new world along with his family. It is a typical immigrant story and I believe a lot of people can relate themselves to it.
What makes this movie so interesting is that it accurately grasps the spirit of indian and indian immigrants. Typic trait number 1: Arranged marriage is still the prevailling form of family; This makes me wonder if they know or they will find out what they have missed later? or is the willing to adjust the only thing that takes to a sucessful family? Typical trait number 2: they socialize all the time. In my experience, I dont' necessarily like my cousins. We grow up together, but different wants from life set us apart from very early age. Also, the closer people get, the more difference may be disclosed and dispute will happen. Why Indian people don't get scared of too close-up meetings? or they are just covered up.
Another product of tight community is that all Indian have similar career paths. They are either doctors or engineers or owners of 7/11, or MOTEL. This is decribed by the movie too. Only when they drive, I notice they didn't drive Toyota like in real life, most indians do. ha! I gottya!
Overall, it is a great accurate (according to my Indian friend) review of comtempary Indian culture (how big difference is indian comtempary culture and ancient culture?) and the immigrants' life.
I like it. I give it a 9 out of 10, with 1 being the worst, the 10 the best. I hope to see more other movies that reflect other cultures.
